Is it a good idea to take a year off after high school?

I'm planning to take like a year or maybe a year and a half off after high school and do like some volunteer work and then perhaps man the Truth booth at Warped Tour (I love Warped Tour!) and I'm wondering if that would be a good thing? Cause also, I'm horrible with volunteering now and all that. I mean in my head it seems fun and helpful, so it's like killing two birds with one stone, (ie. having more volunteer work on my college applications but having awesome experiences along with it.) but I'm wondering in the realms outside my over imaginative mind if it's a good idea.
