How to improve the relationship with the lord?

Hey everyone. I'm a christan and I've been going to church as long as I can remember but recently I have been not going to church for a couple to 4 weeks. I'm gonna start going this week. I was in bible club in high school but when high school stopped I started to drift away from reading my bible and I've been on and off about going to church. Every signal night I have been praying ever since I was 16 years old. I rarely trust anyone because I had a rough p in my life. I'm 18 years old now. I want to improve my relationship with the lord jesus christ but how do I fo it? I always talk to him and then pray to him but I don't know. I think that may sound a bit weird. Can anyone help me? I appreciate it.
